Distant Relatives in Trench Town
Empowering Jamaican Youth through Education and Tech.
This August, the Distant Relatives Project is coordinating our annual “Feeding Our Relatives initiative in Kingston, Jamaica and celebrating our new partnership with Jamaica’s Ministry of Culture, Entertainment, Gender and Sports.
Children and youth often face familial, social, and environmental challenges that dramatically impede their development. In partnership with Rev Noir Foundation, well be hosting coding camps, youth vocation training, and creating an international mentor system. We’ll also be hosting our annual back to school drive which will supply over 5, 000 youth with enough supplies to last the school year.
The rise of non-communicable diseases has meant a dramatic rise in the number of people seeking medical assistance. NCDs are the leading cause of death and continue to be a major public health burden due to the lifelong treatment and care needed to address these chronic conditions. Our FOR initiative will include a health fair that will provide the Trench Town, Spanish Town and Maxfield Avenue community with access to basic fundamental healthcare and education. Our team will also be donating medical instruments and supplies to a local hospital in the Maxfield community.
The mission of our partnership is to to engage the Jamaican youth and give them access to resources and opportunities that will help minimize their exposure to violence and illegal activities. We’re working with the Ministry to build a sustainable platform where vocation training and technical skills will be at the core.
