We’re going to Ethiopia and we need your help.

The Distant Relatives Project is a 501(c)3 organization that is committed to the development of underserved communities around the world with a focus in Africa. Our organization has 3 core pillars of concentration including: education, homelessness, and healthcare. With a vision of carrying out our services in Ethiopia, we connected with Felege Elders Development Association located in Kebele 11 also know as Amede, a nursery home and shelter for the elderly and their immediate family members.

One of our organization members, Yanet Adere, completed her 5 week pharmacy rotation working at Tikur Ambesa earlier this summer. While in Ethiopia, she visited the facility and connected with Sister Meron Tekele, the one nurse and director of Felege. We assessed the need and core services of their program and decided that their work is aligned with the vision of our organization.

Providing a helping hand

The Mission

Although there are 34 patients living on-site, Felege also supports 240 households in the immediate community with groceries and school supplies. In exchange, young adults from these families will volunteer at the facility, washing clothes, bathing elderly, cooking and working with Sister Meron to provide medical assistance. Some of the items that are needed include: cleaning and medical supplies, gloves, sanitary wipes, hand sanitizers, masks, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen. Over the next 4 weeks, we’ll be conducting donation drives here in Washington, DC. The Distant Relatives Project’s goal is to build a sustainable and long-lasting relationship with Felege, as we have done with schools, hospitals and organizations in Ghana, Jamaica and Nigeria.
